DNT ThermNight TNC225R Review: Best Thermal Scope Under $1200

DNT Optics May 09, 2026 0 Comments

Based on a review and field testing by @Top Shot Dustin, this article takes a closer look at the DNT ThermNight TNC225R and its real-world performance in the field.

Thermal optics have historically been a massive investment for hunters and shooters. While some high-end brands can cost several thousand dollars, the DNT ThermNight TNC225R breaks the mold by coming in at under $1,200.

But does a budget-friendly price tag mean sacrificing performance? In this review, we’ll break down the features, field performance, and a few quirks of the DNT ThermNight TNC225R to help you decide if it’s the right optic for your setup.

DNT ThermNight: Digital Day/Night Vision and Thermal Imaging in One Scope

The standout feature of the DNT ThermNight is its multispectral capability, meaning it integrates thermal imaging and digital day/night vision into a single optic.

Since the thermal and digital day/night channels operate independently, each mode requires its own zeroing process. However, once configured, the combination of these technologies is highly effective in the field.

Spotting with Thermal

The ThermNight TNC225R features a 256×192 resolution thermal sensor. While you won't get ultra-detailed thermal imaging to perfectly identify a wounded deer at 300 yards, it is exceptional for spotting hidden heat signatures through brush at closer ranges of 30 to 50 yards.

Identifying with Day/Night Vision

Once you spot a warm shape with the thermal, you can instantly switch over—or use the picture-in-picture mode—to the 1920×1080 resolution day/night view to definitively identify your target. For example, this feature easily allows a hunter to distinguish a possum at 60 yards when a traditional thermal scope might only show an indistinct heat signature.

Powerful IR Illuminator

The included infrared illuminator offers five brightness settings, enabling clear visibility out to 450 yards while reducing foreground washout at close range.

Ultimately, the most effective strategy is to use the thermal as a search function to find hot spots, and then switch to the night vision for actual target identification and shooting.

Built-In Ballistic Calculator and Laser Rangefinder

For under $1,200, the DNT ThermNight TNC225R also includes an integrated laser rangefinder and ballistic calculator.

Unlike many companion apps that can feel limited or unintuitive, the DNT app features an extensive library of loads, bullets, and cartridges. Whether you are shooting expensive rounds or standard 40-grain CCI .22LR, you can easily select your ammo from the app's library and sync the data seamlessly to the scope.

  • The optic holds five zeroing profiles and five ballistic profiles.

  • When ranging a target, the scope instantly calculates bullet drop and provides an automatic crosshair holdover.

  • In field tests with subsonic .22LR ammo, the calculator allowed for perfect one-for-one hits at distances out to 204 yards and beyond.

Video Recording and Streaming

The scope features a Micro-OLED screen and records footage in crisp 1080p resolution. You can seamlessly download these videos directly to your phone over Wi-Fi using the DNT app.

If you want to share the experience, the optic can stream live video to your phone. It is an excellent tool for introducing new shooters or hunters to the experience, allowing you to see exactly what they are seeing through the scope.

Ergonomics and Controls

The controls on the DNT ThermNight TNC225R are highly intuitive. The layout features an easy-to-use zoom wheel, a dedicated button for the laser rangefinder, and a quick-switch button to toggle between thermal and night vision.

Note: The layout is highly optimized for right-handed shooters and may be less comfortable for lefties.

3 Things to Know Before You Buy

Before you take the unit out to the range, there are three important things to be aware of:

  1. Startup Lag: When you first turn the optic on, it might be laggy for the first 5 to 8 seconds as it boots up. Don't panic—it smooths out completely after this initial boot sequence.

  2. Firmware Updates Required for Syncing: You may have trouble syncing the ballistics program from your phone to the optic right out of the box. Updating the scope's firmware easily fixes this, and DNT's customer service is highly responsive if you need assistance.

  3. Mac Incompatibility: The TNC225R supports firmware updates via Windows PC only. MacOS is not supported for this model’s update process.

Final Verdict

The DNT ThermNight TNC225R is a versatile multispectral optic designed to deliver thermal detection, digital day/night imaging, ranging capability, and ballistic support in a streamlined all-in-one platform.

For hunters and shooters looking to step into thermal and night vision optics without moving into premium-tier pricing, the TNC225R delivers a compelling balance of performance, functionality, and value at under $1,200.
